Liposomal Bupivacaine and Periarticular Injection Are Not Superior toSingle-Shot Intra-articular Injection for Pain Control in Total KneeArthroplasty

چکیده
Introduction: Liposomal bupivacaine has been shown to be effective in managing post-operative pain in hallux valgus and hemorrhoid surgery. However, non-industry-supported and well-powered randomized studies evaluating its efficacy in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) are lacking. Our hypothesis was that liposomal bupivacaine would not decrease postoperative visual analog pain scores (VAS) or narcotic consumption in the acute post-operative period.

Periarticular injection of liposomal bupivacaine in total knee arthroplasty
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of a periarticular injection using liposomal bupivacaine could decrease pain and improve outcomes after total knee arthroplasty. Fifty consecutive patients received no periarticular injections (group A). Another 50 consecutive patients received a periarticular injection of liposomal bupivacaine (group B). There were no differences in th...
متن کاملEvaluation of intra-articular injection of bupivacaine in combination with morphine, methylprednisolone, or alone on pain after knee arthroscopy
Background and Aims: Knee arthroscopy is used to diagnose and treat intra-articular lesions. The control of acute pain after arthroscopy requires the use of a method with the least side effects and most efficacies. This study aimed to compare the sedative effect of bupivacaine in combination with morphine, methylprednisolone, or alone in knee arthroscopy after intra-articular injection. Materi...
متن کاملPeriarticular Injection with Bupivacaine for Postoperative Pain Control in Total Knee Replacement: A Prospective Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Trial
Background. Local periarticular injection with bupivacaine alone in TKA has not been studied. Thus, we aimed to examine the effectiveness of local periarticular injection with bupivacaine for post-operative pain control in TKA. Method. Sixty patients undergoing TKA by a single surgeon were randomly assigned into two groups in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. In the injection group, pat...
متن کاملPain Control after Total Knee Arthroplasty: Comparing Intra-Articular Local Anesthetic Injection with Femoral Nerve Block
Background. Direct intra-articular injection of low doses of local anesthetic (IALA) after closure of the joint capsule remains controversial for pain control after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods. A retrospective study comparing patients receiving IALA with high doses (0.5% bupivacaine 60 mL) of local anesthetics or FNB in addition to intravenous patient-controlled analgesia with opioid...
متن کاملImproving total knee arthroplasty perioperative pain management using a periarticular injection with bupivacaine liposomal suspension
Patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) report low satisfaction with postoperative pain control. The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a difference in post-operative pain for TKA patients without femoral nerve block receiving an intra-operative pericapsular injection of bupivacaine liposome suspension (EXPAREL; Pacira Pharmaceuticals, Inc., San Diego, California) versus ...
